[L3 209 / The Protestant Reformation] and the spread of the doctrines of [G 20 / Martin Luther] and particularly Calvin in France, occurred in the early 16th century. Calvinism quickly became established in Normandy and Brittany, and the French clergy and laymen who followed these Protestant doctrines were known as Huguenots.
By 1562, over 2,000 Calvinist churches had been founded in France. There may have been some Calvinist learning or Huguenot circles in or around Chartres. The establishment of Calvinism in France led to the [L3 210 / Wars of Religion] which dominated the second half of the 16th century in France.
